Hindsight

I went on an interview this morning. I am keeping my fingers crossed as it is something I would actually enjoy doing! But the reason for this post is not the interview. I actually had to write about the absolutely adorable fat little cow figurines I saw in the interviewer's office. I did ask for the story behind them, but in hindsight, I should have also asked for the name of them. I've been thinking about those cute little cows all day! Of course googling cute fat cow doesn't come up with much help. Thankfully I had the search filter turned on!

In other news. Josh is home sick. Yesterday I had a feeling he was getting sick. Last night he started to think he was getting sick. This morning after getting up for work, he declared he really was sick. So, I'm taking care of him. The cat has been helping. She's been sitting with him and leaving when he gets annoying. Smart cat.

I should go check on the patient. Wish me luck folks. He's never fun when he is sick.

Cherry Blossoms

I have a fondness for cherry blossoms. They are blooming in Washington D.C. now, so I decided to see if anyone had posted any pictures on flickr. I discovered this wedding cake. If Josh and I had had a wedding, that would be the cake. It is so adorable. They are made by a California company called Glass Slipper Gourmet. This cake is just crazy. Morocco and 1930s Vogue are awesome as well. I stopped looking after I saw the Lilac Blossoms cake. I wouldn't want anyone to eat it. It looks so great.

Taking a Break

I'm taking a break. I've been doing a lot of studying. During my little break, I saw a bit of a really bad movie called Landspeed. It was about breaking the land speed record. It was from 2002, but it really seemed like an early 1990s movie. It had that feel.

Now I'm waiting for the Martinsville race to begin. I should probably go ahead and turn on the surround sound, right? Oh look, it is the FedEx car. Apparently it is about 40 degrees at the track. Holy carp. It's in the 80s here.

Race time...

Testing

This is a test post. I'm having issues with technorati, so I am testing something. Cross your fingers that it will work.

Head Owww

I just hit my head on a shelf in the laundry area. I do it almost every time I take clothes out of the dryer. I think I may have a permanent indentation on my skull. It really hurts now. I've been battling what feels like the start of a migraine for days now. They have been doing prescribed burns near here (at the preserve at the end of my street). It more than likely has something to do with that. It hurts, but it isn't a full blow migraine.

I'm just going to hope that tomorrow is loads better than today. I'm taking Brittany to spend her Ikea gift cards tomorrow. This could be frightening.

Lists and money

I am writing my grocery list. I notice that there isn't much of a difference from week to week. There is the occasional cleaning product or toiletry. In general though, it is nearly the same. Unfortunately, every week the grocery bill gets bigger and bigger. I've always over budgeted what we spend on groceries, but now the actual number is creeping uncomfortably close to my "safe" number. That is not a reassuring thought.

If the number is increasing such a noticeable amount for my bill. I worry about those individuals and families on fixed incomes. A few weeks ago I was near the milk section of the grocery store and I overheard and elderly woman saying to her husband, "Milk has gone up $0.25 in one week. One week!" My mom observed the same "phenomenon" with toilet paper. Interestingly enough in the case of the toilet paper, it went up more than $0.25 in two days!

In the end, I still see people with baskets full of "junk" food that are paying with credit cards. I hope they are getting cash back on those cards.

Link Roundup

It is time to clean off my desktop which means it is time for miftik's link roundup.

YouTube Videos:
1.) Live Action Ms. Pac-Man by the Go-Team. One word. Awesome.
2.) Cadbury Creme Egg snuff films. I don't know who thought of these, but there is something disturbing about watching creme eggs trying to off themselves. Check out the UK website for more disturbing fun.
3.) We are the World, as sung by Japanese impersonators.
4.) A Wow spoof of movies, MMOvie.
5.) Horton Hatches the Egg. 1942 Warner and Dr. Seuss. Perfect.
6.) Not on YouTube, but a video none the less. The Lorax, the complete cartoon.
7.) Captain Dissillusion. He makes sense of the silly things.

And for the rest...

1.) Knitting links on my crafty section.
2.) Emergency Substitutions. Unfortunately I ran out of vanilla extract and needed something to substitute. Even more unfortunately, I was out of vanilla bean as well. Doh.
3.) Radiohead is looking for listeners to create a video for any of the songs on their latest work, In Rainbows. I have an idea for 15 Steps, but I don't see myself taking part in this contest.
4.) Organized Home. Be Still my organized heart. (link via Pamela)
5.) How to apply mineral makeup from BareMinerals. There is a video that starts up on default, so may want to initially turn your volume down.

Oh the Pain

Josh and I worked in the yard today. He did a lot more work, but I wasn't feeling well to start with, so we are both equally miserable right now. We both tried to get up from the couch and were hunched over. Just a little bit of pain. I feel like my spine is compressed. Ow.

We got our coupon for the digital TV converter from the gubment. I only picked up one box and we hooked it up last night. It works pretty nicely. We'll probably pick up the second one later. Now we REALLY have a lot of PBS channels. We get three different stations plus their extra digital stations. Our TVs are in pretty good conditions, so changing them isn't a necessity. Especially with as little as we watch it. Maybe if I get a job we will get a fancy TV, but even then, I think I'd rather work on the house and maybe get a couch first.

TV and Movies

Josh and I don't have cable. I've stated this a number of times. We have cable internet, but we really don't watch all that much television. The only cable show we watch is Mythbusters. We can watch that via the internet. Everything else we watch is something we can only get online or we can get over the air.

Now, I have discovered VeohTV. I had known of hulu.com and waited for it to open. Hulu has full tv shows and full length movies available for streaming. They do play ads, but I've only encountered 15 second commercials. Not too bad. They have a fair number of cable shows too. Cable, who needs stinkin' cable.

Veoh allows you to play hulu shows and movies as well as other video. They have channels to sort through it all as well as search. Veoh hosts videos like YouTube does. I happened across Veoh while looking for Voyagers episodes. Kris, they have them. I watched (and then downloaded) Worlds Apart! The quality isn't that good, but apparently the person that posted them took them from a tape. I'm surprised it was still viewable after that many years! It looked better playing through to the TV though.

The official movies and television shows on hulu.com look good. You can embed them in web pages. You can embed certain segments of the show or movie as well. For those times you want to say, WTF? I haven't tried to download any other videos other than the one Voyagers episode. That was hosted on Veoh, so you might not be able to get the hulu ones.

Well, I must go now. There is a brush fire down the road. It is supposed to be under control, but I'm still going to see what is going on.

Flashback

One of my aunts is only a five years older than I am, so we grew up together. Apparently she is at Best Buy right now and discovered that the old show, Voyagers has been released on dvd! Of course she had to call me because we used to watch it.

For those that aren't old enough to remember or have seen it the show, it is about a time traveler and a boy that go through time to repair history. I only remember one episode clearly, "Worlds Apart". It was an episode where Thomas Edison invents the electric light (and that was by accident).

Good gravy I feel old. That was in 1982.

Bassinet

There is a bassinet in the trunk of my car. It isn't for me. Don't worry. It is for my mom's house. When my future niece/nephew arrives, my mom needs somewhere for the baby to sleep when it is still small. So, I got one for her and it is in my car trunk.

Speaking of my mom, yesterday I took her to Ikea. What did I start. She loved it. Gabriel was with us and had about thirty temper tantrums. My mom wants to go back soon. She loved the white cabinets in the kitchen area. My mother doesn't really shop much, so it was something different for her. I told her that we could paint her cabinets. The ones she has are in great condition. She just likes white cabinets. Maybe we'll do it one day.

I haven't worked on the yard for a while now. We had so many bags and bundles of stuff that we were running out of places to put them. Josh and I put out eleven bags for pick up yesterday. At that rate, it will take two months to get rid of the already bagged and bundled stuff. Once we are done, I wonder if Josh will want to build something like this as a brew shed. Then again, it is me that has to sit outside and stir. Maybe I need to build it.

Cosmetics

OK. I'm not really a cosmetics person, but there are some times when they are needed. Thanks to my reaction, I have a small patch that is healing and looks like I have been punched. Thankfully, it is near my hairline, but it is still noticeable. So, I went researching and people seem to like Jane Cosmetics. I don't need a bunch of it, so I didn't want to spend a large amount of money on something for such a small area. Jane seemed to fit the bill.

I discovered Walgreens sold Jane and then I discovered they were having buy one get one free on Jane cosmetics. Score. Even better score? While researching Jane, I discovered a $2.00 off coupon (pdf link)! So armed with coupons, I went and picked up some makeup. I discovered I could use the coupon on the "free" item as well. Score! I got $15 worth of makeup for under $4! Holy discounts batman. So, if you are in the US, have a Walgreens near you and like Jane cosmetics, print yourself some coupons and go shopping! The bogo sale ends on Saturday, so do it before they close Saturday night.

Oh, I'm totally loving the Be Pure Mineral makeup. I used it and you wouldn't know I had anything on. I washed it off and could totally see the difference.

Organize

I was feeling pretty miserable yesterday. Between the bumps and the sore throat, I just didn't want to do anything. That is rare for me. I get too bored "resting" so I have to do something. I had a commitment I had made for yesterday morning, so I did that. I needed to run to Ikea on my way, so I stopped in and picked up what I needed. I also got some Flyt basic magazine files. Between Josh's flying magazines and my knitting magazines, we needed them.

So, when Josh got home I told him just how miserable I felt. I told him "I felt so bad I couldn't even organize." Yeah, it was that bad.

Stitches

I got my stitches out today. I'm still tender, but happy that they are gone. Eating should be easier. Oh and it has been noted, no Amoxicillin for me. The doc added up the data and believes that my reaction was to the Amoxicillin. It might not have been an allergic reaction, but it was the only thing different that had occurred. Oh well. I need to make sure that all of my other doctors know.

Alfred (my almost cat) has been spending his days in my wheelbarrow. I'm sure his owners wonder where he is. He's hanging out at my house! His sons, the kittens are quite comfortable with me now. I managed to pet one of them. I tried to spend some time with them yesterday, but the mosquitoes were attacking. They are talkative like their father. One of them is a good hunter as well. Josh was in the back yard this past weekend and spotted the one that looks like the mom, running into the woods with a squirrel. Yuck.

OK, I just had to yell at some kids. The threw rocks at an anthill and now the ants are all over my driveway. They said they were doing it because one of the ants bit them. They bit them because they walked on the anthill. Which means they were walking in my yard, not the sidewalk. I told them that it is like people who shoot home intruders. When you invade an ant's house, they get defensive and bite.

I have a sore throat. So not cool. I want to scream it hurts so much.

Awake

I woke up for the launch, but the sky was completely covered with clouds. The coast glowed a wee bit orange, but nothing that would show up in pictures. I promptly went back to bed.

Decision

To wake up at 2am or not to wake up. We aren't sure whether to wake up for the shuttle launch or not. It would probably be as awesome as last time, but I don't know if I will be able to get back to sleep.

This switching the clocks forward crap has thrown me all off. It is quarter past seven and still quite bright outside.

Conservative

It is ask not aks. You don't aks a questions. You ask a question. Just like you don't get books from a libary, you get books from a library. I just watched a commercial and the guy actually said aks. WTF?

This weekend I've been having some sort of reaction to something. I don't know if it is an allergic reaction or what, but I've got little spots forming. They are located randomly. I've had chicken pox (almost exactly eight years ago) and it isn't localized like shingles. My throat was sore and today I'm noticing that I am having a hard time tasting anything salty. I just had a couple of crackers and they tasted bland. I'm giving it one more day and then I'm going to the doctors.

Josh got the server working. He swapped cases and power supplies. It is much quieter now. I like that. It was so quiet in the house that we could hear the ticking of my little Charlie Chaplin alarm clock. That alarm clock has to be pushing 17 years old. It has survived quite a few moves and falls and it just keeps on ticking.

I scored a few things at the hospice shop. First, I got a vacuum sealer. I knew it would be handy for Josh to use for his grain. He has a lot and it would suck if it got too much air. Plus, the vacuum sealer helps save a little bit of space. He's already taken over a shelf and a half in the pantry and another shelf in one of the cabinets.

My second score was a brand new LitterMaid EliteMega Litter Box for $5. It is the Elite Mega version. So far it seems to work, except for my kitty's um, movements. Apparently hers are too small for it to work. So, I am not so sure if it is a positive score or not.

The other scores were a boat load of X-men comic books for AJ, Making Bead & Wire Jewelry: Simple Techniques, Stunning Designs for when Brittany and Shalyn come visit. For myself I got some old knitting pattern books.

Uh Oh

You know things aren't going well when you hear your significant other saying, "Boot you cocky-poo-piece-of-$h!t" which was actually preceded by something much more foul than you would really want to post on your blog.

Josh is working on the server.

It is terribly windy outside and I haven't been able to do any yard work. I do believe I will start going through withdrawal soon. I was hoping we would get to take the chainsaw to some of the fallen trees that are halting my progress . It was so windy that the trash can lids kept blowing off of the trash cans. I wasn't in the mood to have dirt and leaves blown into my face all day. I'll just relax today instead.

Uh, oh. More swearing. Maybe I should go and try to pass some positive ju-ju to the server.

Crazy Weather

There is a fair amount of crazy weather going on outside. It was just hailing a few minutes ago. Now the sun is shining. Yes, crazy. Monday I bought a Weather and All Hazards Alert Monitor. It has been going nuts. I saw a cheaper weather radio, but I knew this one was pretty good, so I got it. It is definitely loud enough that it will wake us up in the night. The weather is supposed to be worse in a couple of hours. I'm not looking forward to it.

Not Tonight

Note to self: Double check DDR to make sure you aren't on expert mode when you want to be in beginner mode. Holy carp my legs are killing me. I haven't played DDR since December, so I thought I would take it easy. Oops

I have been working a lot on the yard. I am slowly getting over my disgust of bugs. There are so many creatures living out there that I have to get over it. That's been taking up most of my time. I've been taking pictures, but I'm being lazy. They are on my desktop and I am currently using my laptop in the living room. I haven't the brain energy to think about pictures.

New Amsterdam is on. I didn't watch it when it was on last year, but I figure I will give it a try. Jenn blogged about it over on her site and it reminded me.

Secret

I have a secret. Don't tell anyone. You see, my car is twelve years old. Yes, twelve. Even though it is twelve years old, I get 29 mpg in the city and 31-32 mpg on the highway. Gasp. So, whats my secret? I drive normal and I maintain my car. I don't speed and sudden stop. I do drive above the speed limit, but not to excess. I keep my tires inflated and Josh and I keep track of what is going on with the car.

And now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
