Analyzing the Hogwarts scarf

Friday, November 25th, 2005

Boredom and illness has caused me to attempt to analyze the Hogwarts scarf worn in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I don’t know if I will get to make it before anyone else actually figures it out, but I wanted to record what I was thinking before I forgot and started over, again.

I haven’t been able to figure out if they are 1×1 rib or knit in the round. But since I prefer the 1×1 rib, My first try will probably be as such. Also, I imagine the yarn is dk weight, but you may be able to go with worsted. I would recommend in the round if you use worsted though. They also seem to be using the same darker colors as last year. You could give the atypically.net color list or djinni’s knitpick color card comparison a try for yarn ideas.

CO 80 stitches in black.
64 rows in black.
*4 rows in red.
4 rows in yellow.
4 rows in green.
4 rows in blue
64 rows in black.
Repeat from * 4 times more, (ending with 64 rows of black).
Bind off.

I am estimating that there is about 1″ of black fringe, but there could be more.

It seems that the Hogwarts scarves are shorter than the house scarves. I referenced Dean and Neville for most of this and the scarf seemed to end around mid thigh.

I will try to add to my notes here as I figure out anything else or find anything else.

Edit: New stills have me changing my plan. I will make a more thorough edit later. I have a milkshake and it’s better than yours. :D

Klein

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Someone on one of the LJ groups I am in was asking how to knit a mobieus scarf and also asked about a Klein bottle hat. Aha, I had a pattern (PDF file) for one in my bookmarks! Go me. I’ve had that on my list for a while, but haven’t had the time to get to it. I think my oldest brother would get a kick out of it. Maybe for his next birthday?

I am 180 stitches away from completeing my great grandmother’s gift. I’m not sure if I can work on it yet. My eyes are burning and I still feel miserable. Beavis this sucks. If my medicine kicks in, I will be all over it. I want to knock out presents this week. I have at least two more things to do after this. I’m not sure if I will have enough yarn for one of them. I think I might actually find some from the same dye lot though. Last time I saw, they still had some.

I do love knitting patterns

Crafty patterns from the creator of the knitted digestive system. I find the slit throat choker kind of cute.

For the holiday season you can purchase Tannenbaum, the tree hat.

A quick mosaic knitting tutorial.

Five to go

Friday, November 11th, 2005

I only have five balls of yarn left to go on the lap blanket for my great grandmother! If I knit gung-ho today, I could probably finish it. However, with me being sick that seems very unlikely. I am guessing that I frogged some last night. I have a vague memory of doing it and there is a rewound skein sitting next to the blanket in progress.

I also have Josh’s gloves to go. I don’t know which to do first. There isn’t quite a need for gloves yet, so I don’t feel rushed. We had a cold front push through last night and guess what the high for today is. 79° F! Tomorrow it will be back in the 80s. So, there is a bit of time before he will be needing the gloves.

Yule

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Ha, there is a Bad Juju knitalong. I’m really thinking about using it as a base to make a doll for one of the kids for Yule. I actually woke up and all of the sudden thought of something I should make for my baby nephew, Gabriel. Juju could be a good base for my idea.

The second glove is coming along. I’m almost done with the thumb gusset (three rows to go) and will begin the upper palm after that. Hopefully it will go fast like the first one did. I was hoping to try my hand at some socks again with this yarn but I think I will work on Yule presents first.

Does anyone have any ideas for presents? I’ve got ideas for one sister in law, one brother, and a nephew down, but that leaves, plenty of adults and kids to either make or buy something for.

Mary Poppins

Ooh, someone has posted the stitch pattern (possibly) for Mary Poppin’s scarf! Cuteness!

Half a pair

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005

I finished one glove. It is entirely too big for my hand, so I will wait for both gloves before I can get an action shot with Josh wearing them. The pinky was a pain in the tush. I frogged it twice and finally got it on the third go. I don’t think that is too bad for my first pair of actual gloves. I think I’ll take cables over gloves anytime though.

My mom brought me some yarn and needles today! They were from Brittany’s best friend. She tried very hard to get into knitting, but couldn’t. I gave her and Brittany each a skein of yarn and a set of needles when they told me they wanted to learn. Her friend’s older sister bought Stitch N’ Bitch and she tried to learn from that. Unfortunately, Brittany and her friend were 10 at the time and it just didn’t stick. So, I think she was trying to clean up and decided she should give me the size 15US needles that she had also bought, the needles I gave her and two skeins of yarn she had bought. If she wants to try again at another time, she knows where to find me.

Glove woes

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

Well, I finally hit my first glove knitting snag. I knit the ring finger of Josh’s glove and closed it up just before he got home. Unfortunately, it was too big around. I think I need to take out about five stitches after the first round. This means I have to reknit the entire finger. Boooo, hisssss.

So, I will be starting that after I post this and get myself something to drink. It was just frustrating because the other fingers were just right. Well, at least the height was spot on for this finger! I’m going to count how many rows it was so I will know for this next go around.
