Le Sigh

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

I’m organizing my bookmark folder and thought I should post some of these. Hopefully they can be useful to someone out there.

LJ user Djinni scanned in her color cards from KnitPicks a while back and have been quite useful. She also happened to decode the animal cracker’s hat pattern as well as a pygmy puff pattern.

An easy way to make something round when knitting.

Glow in the dark yarn. Fun

Nantasket

Friday, October 14th, 2005

I placed an order for some sock yarn (OK, a lot of sock yarn) for a couple of projects and I also threw in a copy of The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques. While I was on a virtual shopping spree*, I remembered the Nantasket Basket pattern. It has intrigued me often. However, I didn’t purchase it. I know, it is only $5. I decided not to buy it because I want to try and figure out my own basket pattern!

I have a ton (OK, so it is about 500 yards) of undyed worsted weight wool to experiment with. I’ve already made plenty of round bottom things and I am already having flashes of ideas on ways to attach the handles. Oh yes, experiment I shall.

The sock yarn will be for a pair of gloves for Josh and some socks for myself. I forgot to add that I managed to knit a second sock/footie to that other evil one I did. I still don’t like the yarn, but wanted to see if using a larger sized needle helped the whole scheme of things. It did. Not only did I finish the sock in a day, but it was much less painful. Forget the tiny needles. Unless I am making tiny things, they will just pretend to be reusable giant toothpicks!

I still have one skein of that evil sock yarn left. I am thinking of making a mock up of the glove with it. Either that or work on the techniques I will need to practice to make the gloves.

*Call it my pre-birthday shopping spree

Jack O Hallowig

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Jack O Hallowig Feeling that I needed to make something ridiculous but simple, I decided to make a hallowig. It seems to have come out quite nicely. The pattern itself is quite easy as the most complicated part of it all is remembering to switch to a few stitches after casting on for the bangs! I really like that it takes the shape easily. I did have a bit of a time getting the flip ups (the bottom) even, but I suppose that is just an issue of me holding it still and paying attention!

Pattern: Hallowig from knitty.com
Materials used:
US8 Circulars and DPNs
Generic acrylic blue and green yarn
Yarn needle

Ideas

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

I have nothing on the needles and need something to keep me busy, but they can’t be anything serious. I was thinking of maybe making a bunny and a few wombs. I have a ton of white acrylic that is begging to be used. I had wanted to make Bubby the koala, but I have heard some folks say that theirs was not as appealing up close. There is also Mr. Dangly, but I have to call him something else. I feel so dirty when I say his name.

Edited to add:
Cute fruit and veggies to knit.

Husbandator

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

Josh would like some gloves. The Cigar pattern on Knitty.com is in the fashion he would like them (two full fingers, three half fingers). The only problem is that he would like a sock weight yarn. I think I may end up just winging it, but now I am trying to decide what yarn to use.

Any suggestions? They would need to be superwash. I’ll keep looking. Maybe I’ll do a mockup in KnitPicks’ Essential.

Coronet completed

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

CoronetSeeing as how my brother doesn’t tend to read this area of my site, here’s a picture of his birthday present.

I have managed to finish this present with three and a half weeks to spare! He saw my finished Rogue and like the whole idea of cables, so he asked about a hat for his birthday. I showed him the pattern for Coronet and he liked it. The pattern was extremely simple. I also like that it can work for any gender with just a choice of color. I used some of my leftover fern colored yarn from my Rogue since it works well for both genders.

It came out bigger than my head (hence my not modeling it), but I think it will be fine for my brother. If all else fails he can either shrink it or give it back to me so I can shorten it.

Pattern: Coronet from knitty.com
Materials used:
US8 Circulars and DPNs
KnitPicks Wool of the Andes in Fern
Yarn needle
Cable needle

Little Bookscarf

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

PoA BookscarfI made a tiny little PoA bookscarf. I didn’t add any fringe to it because I think it would look silly on it. These style scarves have very short fringe and so on a bookmark, it would look just too silly.

It was fairly simple, but I really hate using such tiny needles. They make a great tight fabric though, that’s for sure.

Pattern: PoA Bookscarf
Materials used:
US00 DPNs
Generic cotton crochet thread
A crapload of patience

Holiday knits

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

I may actually buy this year’s holiday issue of Vogue Knitting. Tartans and fair isle. /sigh

I’m making great progress on the birthday present. I may finish it by the end of the week. Hell, I may finish it tonight.
