Knitting Math

Star Wars + Knitting = Rebel Alliance and Empire Attack Cushions.

I’m thinking of making these for the little lady. First I might make a sweatband with the rebel alliance logo on it. That would be easier and faster.

And for good measure, check out the Wonder Woman bag someone created! I am really hoping that a pattern is posted because I was one of those silly kids that loved running around in her WW underroos.

Bought

Saturday, June 25th, 2005

I have bought the pattern for both Rogue and the Celtic cap. I figured that since the celtic cap uses the same cable pattern, I might as well buy it and practice with that and maybe Josh will actually wear it. If not, I’m sure I could get Brittany to wear one.

Just thought I would update.

Project Ideas

Friday, June 24th, 2005

I’ve decided that I want to make Rogue. I know, it’s been around forever, but I am really thinking it might be something I want to do. I will buy the pattern sometime between now and Monday, I hope. However, there are a few requirements in order to allow myself to buy the yarn for it.

  • I must make a pair of socks. I don’t care if they are butt ugly, I need to try it.
  • I have to practice celtic cables. I am fairly confident in myself when it comes to cabling, but it is a good thing to practice as I need to work on closing.
  • I can’t start working on it until after I finish my current freelance project. As tempting as it may be, I have a very tight deadline. I mean VERY tight.

Basic Sock Lessons

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

A basic ribbed sock knitting class. I think I will use this as my reference. I usually like to experiment and make up my own patterns, but seeing as I have been bad and not knit any socks yet, I thought I should try this out.

I still didn’t get my needles, but that’s no biggie. I have a lot of other things that I need to do tonight and tomorrow, so I won’t be able to do anything except mindless knitting. I had wanted to make blankets for the local spca, but I can’t seem to find any information about donating such materials. I’ll keep looking. It would be a great use for the massive amount of acrylic yarn that I got when I bought the bags from the thrift store.

What was I thinking?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

I have a ton of merino sock yarn that I found at a thrift store. I’ve been thinking about doing socks for a long time but I didn’t want to waste nice yarn on my first victim, I mean sock. So I bought some cheapo varigated acrylic yarn. If I mess up, it’s ok.

Well, tonight I thought I would give my it a go. Doh! All of my DPNs are either too small or two big. I thought it would be interesting to go ahead and try it on some of the smaller needles but boy was I wrong. My wrists were already hurting and that just made it worse.

So now I have to go out tomorrow and try to find some needles that are the right size.

Wombs

Monday, June 20th, 2005

A trio of wombsI knitted some wombs for Wombs on Washington.

Materials Used:
See womb pattern. For two of them I substituted the yarn in the pattern for some bright orange worsted weight yarn I got at the thrift store.

Materials Used:
Generic worsted weight yarn
US 8 needles
Jo-Ann Sensations’ Berry Angel Hair
US 10 needles
stuffing
tapestry needle

The Birthday Bag

Monday, June 13th, 2005

The Birthday Bag I finished the black bag for my sister in law’s birthday. She wanted me to embroider something on the side, but after I started it I decided it didn’t look too good.

Materials Used:
2 Skeins Patons Merino Classic (black)
US 11 Needles
7″ zipper (may change depending on bag size)
tapestry needle

Process:
Bag body:
Cast on 60.
Knit in St st for 92 rows.
Fold in half and sew up sides.

Handle:
Cast on 6.
Work I-cord to desired length. (I did 60 rows)

Sew handle to bag. Full until desired size/texture. Sew in appropriate sized zipper.

I thought about doing a button closure on it but opted not to because of my nephew’s age and insane ability to find things that shouldn’t go into his mouth.

Katamari bag

Thursday, June 9th, 2005

So I came across this pattern for a katamari bag. I’m tempted to make one, but I know Josh will look at me and ask why I need another bag. I have a pile of ones that I have sewn, knitted and inherited over the years. I really don’t need another one, but maybe I can knit one as a gift, right?

Cat sweater

Thursday, June 9th, 2005

SweaterI finished the sweater for the cat. I managed to get it on her for about two seconds. Not enough time to take a picture. It stands up on its own, so that is the best we’re going to get.

The steeks were rather easy. I probably shouldn’t have done it in black on my first steeking project, but I didn’t snip anywhere I shouldn’t have! Go me.

It is rather big on her, so I will have to take it in a bit. I always forget that I have a petite cat. She’s a whoppin’ nine pounds on a bad day.

I am going to embroider the anarchy A on the back eventually. I started this sweater while I was sick, so I missed getting the chart in and didn’t want to have to start over.

Materials used:
US size 8 straight
Random black acrylic worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook
Blood
Cat

Progress

Thursday, June 2nd, 2005

Whoo-hoo. The knitting and fulling portion of the birthday bag has been completed. Next task is to get the embroidery floss and get to work on that. We (Brittany and I) are voting that putting in a zipper would take away from the bag, so I need to look at closures for it.

I am going to write up the pattern soon. I will post it when I finish the bag completely.
