Hindsight

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I went on an interview this morning. I am keeping my fingers crossed as it is something I would actually enjoy doing! But the reason for this post is not the interview. I actually had to write about the absolutely adorable fat little cow figurines I saw in the interviewer’s office. I did ask for the story behind them, but in hindsight, I should have also asked for the name of them. I’ve been thinking about those cute little cows all day! Of course googling cute fat cow doesn’t come up with much help. Thankfully I had the search filter turned on!

In other news. Josh is home sick. Yesterday I had a feeling he was getting sick. Last night he started to think he was getting sick. This morning after getting up for work, he declared he really was sick. So, I’m taking care of him. The cat has been helping. She’s been sitting with him and leaving when he gets annoying. Smart cat.

I should go check on the patient. Wish me luck folks. He’s never fun when he is sick.

Cherry Blossoms

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I have a fondness for cherry blossoms. They are blooming in Washington D.C. now, so I decided to see if anyone had posted any pictures on flickr. I discovered this wedding cake. If Josh and I had had a wedding, that would be the cake. It is so adorable. They are made by a California company called Glass Slipper Gourmet. This cake is just crazy. Morocco and 1930s Vogue are awesome as well. I stopped looking after I saw the Lilac Blossoms cake. I wouldn’t want anyone to eat it. It looks so great.

Taking a Break

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I’m taking a break. I’ve been doing a lot of studying. During my little break, I saw a bit of a really bad movie called Landspeed. It was about breaking the land speed record. It was from 2002, but it really seemed like an early 1990s movie. It had that feel.

Now I’m waiting for the Martinsville race to begin. I should probably go ahead and turn on the surround sound, right? Oh look, it is the FedEx car. Apparently it is about 40 degrees at the track. Holy carp. It’s in the 80s here.

Race time…

Testing

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

This is a test post. I’m having issues with technorati, so I am testing something. Cross your fingers that it will work.

Head Owww

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I just hit my head on a shelf in the laundry area. I do it almost every time I take clothes out of the dryer. I think I may have a permanent indentation on my skull. It really hurts now. I’ve been battling what feels like the start of a migraine for days now. They have been doing prescribed burns near here (at the preserve at the end of my street). It more than likely has something to do with that. It hurts, but it isn’t a full blow migraine.

I’m just going to hope that tomorrow is loads better than today. I’m taking Brittany to spend her Ikea gift cards tomorrow. This could be frightening.

Lists and money

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I am writing my grocery list. I notice that there isn’t much of a difference from week to week. There is the occasional cleaning product or toiletry. In general though, it is nearly the same. Unfortunately, every week the grocery bill gets bigger and bigger. I’ve always over budgeted what we spend on groceries, but now the actual number is creeping uncomfortably close to my “safe” number. That is not a reassuring thought.

If the number is increasing such a noticeable amount for my bill. I worry about those individuals and families on fixed incomes. A few weeks ago I was near the milk section of the grocery store and I overheard and elderly woman saying to her husband, “Milk has gone up $0.25 in one week. One week!” My mom observed the same “phenomenon” with toilet paper. Interestingly enough in the case of the toilet paper, it went up more than $0.25 in two days!

In the end, I still see people with baskets full of “junk” food that are paying with credit cards. I hope they are getting cash back on those cards.

Link Roundup

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

It is time to clean off my desktop which means it is time for miftik’s link roundup.

YouTube Videos:
1.) Live Action Ms. Pac-Man by the Go-Team. One word. Awesome.
2.) Cadbury Creme Egg snuff films. I don’t know who thought of these, but there is something disturbing about watching creme eggs trying to off themselves. Check out the UK website for more disturbing fun.
3.) We are the World, as sung by Japanese impersonators.
4.) A Wow spoof of movies, MMOvie.
5.) Horton Hatches the Egg. 1942 Warner and Dr. Seuss. Perfect.
6.) Not on YouTube, but a video none the less. The Lorax, the complete cartoon.
7.) Captain Dissillusion. He makes sense of the silly things.

And for the rest…

1.) Knitting links on my crafty section.
2.) Emergency Substitutions. Unfortunately I ran out of vanilla extract and needed something to substitute. Even more unfortunately, I was out of vanilla bean as well. Doh.
3.) Radiohead is looking for listeners to create a video for any of the songs on their latest work, In Rainbows. I have an idea for 15 Steps, but I don’t see myself taking part in this contest.
4.) Organized Home. Be Still my organized heart. (link via Pamela)
5.) How to apply mineral makeup from BareMinerals. There is a video that starts up on default, so may want to initially turn your volume down.

Oh the Pain

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Josh and I worked in the yard today. He did a lot more work, but I wasn’t feeling well to start with, so we are both equally miserable right now. We both tried to get up from the couch and were hunched over. Just a little bit of pain. I feel like my spine is compressed. Ow.

We got our coupon for the digital TV converter from the gubment. I only picked up one box and we hooked it up last night. It works pretty nicely. We’ll probably pick up the second one later. Now we REALLY have a lot of PBS channels. We get three different stations plus their extra digital stations. Our TVs are in pretty good conditions, so changing them isn’t a necessity. Especially with as little as we watch it. Maybe if I get a job we will get a fancy TV, but even then, I think I’d rather work on the house and maybe get a couch first.

TV and Movies

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Josh and I don’t have cable. I’ve stated this a number of times. We have cable internet, but we really don’t watch all that much television. The only cable show we watch is Mythbusters. We can watch that via the internet. Everything else we watch is something we can only get online or we can get over the air.

Now, I have discovered VeohTV. I had known of hulu.com and waited for it to open. Hulu has full tv shows and full length movies available for streaming. They do play ads, but I’ve only encountered 15 second commercials. Not too bad. They have a fair number of cable shows too. Cable, who needs stinkin’ cable.

Veoh allows you to play hulu shows and movies as well as other video. They have channels to sort through it all as well as search. Veoh hosts videos like YouTube does. I happened across Veoh while looking for Voyagers episodes. Kris, they have them. I watched (and then downloaded) Worlds Apart! The quality isn’t that good, but apparently the person that posted them took them from a tape. I’m surprised it was still viewable after that many years! It looked better playing through to the TV though.

The official movies and television shows on hulu.com look good. You can embed them in web pages. You can embed certain segments of the show or movie as well. For those times you want to say, WTF? I haven’t tried to download any other videos other than the one Voyagers episode. That was hosted on Veoh, so you might not be able to get the hulu ones.

Well, I must go now. There is a brush fire down the road. It is supposed to be under control, but I’m still going to see what is going on.

Flashback

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

One of my aunts is only a five years older than I am, so we grew up together. Apparently she is at Best Buy right now and discovered that the old show, Voyagers has been released on dvd! Of course she had to call me because we used to watch it.

For those that aren’t old enough to remember or have seen it the show, it is about a time traveler and a boy that go through time to repair history. I only remember one episode clearly, “Worlds Apart“. It was an episode where Thomas Edison invents the electric light (and that was by accident).

Good gravy I feel old. That was in 1982.
