A plea

A plea for those in the know…
When my dad is asked what he wants for <insert holiday here>, he always says, “I just want my family to be happy” and we just get him something he needs for business or something. Well, this year I asked him that (because it is now tradition) and he gave the usual answer, but about 15 seconds later he added, “If you want to make me a scarf, that is something I could use.”

Now ladies and gentlemen, this is a first! My dad wants a scarf and I want it to be nice and warm. I don’t need a pattern, I need a good yarn. It needs to be soft (my request) and maybe washable, even if it is by hand. He smokes, so I figure it would be good to have something that can be washed often.

<gasp>, I have never worked with Lamb’s Pride, but I was wondering how that is? There is no place around here (or in the state) to buy it, so I figured I would buy it direct if it was soft enough. Most of the generic wools available around here are too harsh. I need help people! If I must, I’ll experiment and give him about five different scarves, but I need something! I am also thinking of getting a half of a yard of fleece to make a fleece scarf.

  1. Since I’m allergic to most wool products, I turned to my mom for advice.

She recommended Baby Alpaca Grande or Lamb’s Pride and said to check it out at The Naked Sheep. http://www.nakedsheep.com
Apparently they have a member’s club, newsletter and some pretty decent sales also.

From what I could see the Baby Alpaca Grande is pricey at 11.99/skein and Lamb’s Pride is 8.50/skein, which is about average for this particular brand.

You might also want to check out some mohair or cashmere yarns. Most of these are super soft, warm and easy to work with; however they are hand wash only. Also, Caron and Bernat Brand yarns seem to be a favorite at mom’s house.

I myself am partial to Lion Brand Yarns http://www.lionbrand.com … not as pricey but great to work with and good quality…(never had a skein of yarn yet where halfway through the skein I find a knot). It’s always a plus when I can work with yarn that doesn’t make me itch :)

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help dear!

  2. Thank you so much! I like some of the Lion Brand stuff too, some not so much.

I was really curious about Lamb’s Pride. I am probably going to buy some Monday from the mill. They have skeins (bulky and worsted) for $5.25 each. I priced shipping for 10 skeins and I think it was around $5. All in all, extremely reasonable!
